Inhabits wetlands, usually large open water areas. They are highly nomadic birds, and are adapted to the ephemeral nature of inland water areas. They often fly long distances at night despite relatively weak wings.
They are the most communal of all Grebes, nesting in groups and clustering on open water. Like other Grebes they feed on aquatic insects, zooplankton, small fish and crustaceans. They are usually silent. Pairing is impermanent and courtship simple. One brood per season. Eggs: 5 to 6; pale blue.
