A diminutive Plover with distinctive plumage that feeds at the edges of freshwater swamps, dams and streams. It has short legs and a short bill making it fit for running and pecking its food without wading much. It feeds on aquatic insects, crustaceans and seeds.
Black-fronted Dotterels feed alone or in pairs and next in solitary territories. If nesting birds are disturbed, both sexes feign injury to distract intruders. Nest is a small depression on a bank, lined with mud pellets. Eggs: 2 to 3; green grey speckled.
