(Acanthiza chrysorrhoa)

Length:  11-12 cm Common

This is the commonest Thornbill, and one of the most familiar small birds. It frequents grassy woodlands, scrub, and the edge of clearings and bare ground. Most feeding is on the ground. The birds work in loose lines picking up insects, spiders, caterpillars, and occasionally seeds.

Yellow-rumped Thornbills are communal, and sedentary. They band together in clans of 10 to 30 to defend a territory. In a good season they may rear up to 4 broods. The nest is bulky with a false cup in the top, and a concealed side entrance. Their song is a descending rich twittered warble, Eggs 3 to 4. Flesh coloured with red brown dots at the larger end.
